Why not have an in-game map.
It seems to me that it could be done with an exploration and fog of war.
Basically you have a map button or circle in the corner that can be enlarged and zoomed in and out.
The map starts out totally black and as you journey through the world, everywhere you visit opens up and becomes visible. As you pass areas and are no longer in those you have explored, the details on the map go away completely but you can still see very basic topography.
This will enable many in-game functions that were in many hit games such as Everquest and World of Warcraft such as tracking ability, treasure maps and treasure hunting. Possibly territorial dividers as very large guilds start to control sections of the land. The choices are vast.
I am not recommending an easy cheesy show all npc's and all players and their flags or anything like that or even mobs.
Just giving a way that in-game map might work and be put to use without exploiting it or dumbing down the game.
